Autonomous systems and communicate in natural language are becoming mainstream technology. The story about Facebook’s #autonomous #conversational systems happened a while ago and captivated the news media. I’m guessing that the research community was not that surprised since #autonomy with machine learning capabilities is supposed to do exactly what Facebook’s #bots did: they invented a new communication protocol. They started exchanging messages that are not understandable using the English grammar and semantics because the systems updated those rules. It is a desirable outcome in a specific context because autonomous systems can optimize the messages and message structure.
The downside is that we no longer control the message and the communication channel. Many
scientific publications discuss why this could be a problem. Many prolific sci-fi authors take the consequences of AI autonomy to the next level. Vernor Vinge’s stories in which AI’s can communicate beyond human comprehension are horrifying in this context.
