From my perspective, The Art of More by Michael Brooks is an essential book for those interested in pursuing a research career in mathematics, algorithms, and related fields. It is hard to make an informed decision when choosing a research theme or a topic for a Ph.D. dissertation. However, this book is tremendously helpful. The Art of More is an excellent resource because it discusses the history and the future of math, computing, and algorithms. Mainly, the area of applied math used in electrical engineering, electronics, information science, quantum physics, and signal processing drives a lot of innovation. For example, the author provides an excellent discussion of the history of signal compression, starting with Fourier transformation, and explaining current approaches involving wavelets and other inventions. Some chapters discuss the exciting research focusing on multidimensional wave mechanics, the Hilbert space, etc. Similarly, the author describes the applications of #quaternions and 8-dimensional algebra (#octonions) as an up-and-coming area supporting quantum applications.
