Is AI ethical (in content moderation applications)?
Custodians of the Internet is a good overview of the content moderation problems in the context of social media, policy, and managerial decisions. The author discusses the complexities of corporate politics, human labor, crowd workers, outsourcing, and AI technology. Generally, the picture of content moderation intertwined with big business, politics, ethics, and legal battles is rather disheartening and bizarre. The multitude of approaches, including editorial reviews, community, flagging, crowd tool, and machine learning, could probably do the job. However, there is an additional layer of complication in the multitude of policies and corporate regulations. The author raises an interesting question about AI ethics. Machine learning is a collection of tools that implement pattern discovery and matching. Some people interpret those algorithms as promoting unethical or perhaps illegal "guilt by association" policies. We might be in for an even more complex discussion on content moderation than we originally anticipated.
