The Inifinite Game by Simon Sinek

The Infinite Game is an excellent book on leadership. I like books that talk about ideals because they set up the standards at the highest levels possible. According to Simon Sinek, building an organization that feels great and inspiring today is not enough. It is also not enough to create that vision in a long-term time frame. The author talks about durations beyond the long term. Sinek inspires leaders to build careers and organizations that succeed beyond their lifetimes and therefore create extraordinary value.

By this standard, there is probably just a handful of visionaries that can measure up. Playing a game in which there is no finish line, and therefore no winning is a concept in many cultures in many different forms, e.g., the journey vs. the finish line dichotomy.

On the other hand, it is harder to measure some of the essential short-term features that are often important in a boundless context. There might be no such thing as winning in business or politics, but a current snapshot is often needed. A large portion of the book is about valuing people whose contributions to organizations are often intangible instead of cost-based. Many of the chapters are probably worth a lot more extensive discussion. Struggles between the grand visions and objectively existing market forces are hard to win on principles presented in the book. However, there is no question that they are worth analyzing.
