Urban city planners, architects, and civil engineers have been researching various city layouts for many decades, if not centuries. Mixed grid and linear designs have been proposed to alleviate some of the most complex problems today in almost every extensive urban system. However, traffic congestion, enormous costs of maintaining the infrastructure, pollution, low quality of living are still largely unsolved problems.
The linear city project proposed in Saudi Arabia might be
the one that will solve many of the existing issues. On the other hand, it
might introduce new ones, no doubt.
This concept might also be something to consider when
planning for the Martian colony layout. At this point, we are not aware of most
technological challenges that will have to be solved. However, the linearly
shaped city might offer an advantage in simplified infrastructure layout
compared to other grid-like approaches.
