This is a hugely important project for #Mars #colonization. In the 90s and early 2000s, the #multiagent community in #AI had a lot to say about #hive-like system architectures. Today, this research will probably receive an increased amount of recognition. It may well be that the inflatable #habitats will get 3D printed above-ground covers, or the Boring Corporation will prove that drilling underground is a better choice. The design work performed by design shops like Eckersley O'Callaghan is essential.
I agree that game engines like #Unreal are an excellent choice for realistic #simulations. However, along the way, there might be a number of hard problems to solve by scientists from different fields. For example, if the #Mars surface is as toxic as many resources have reported, a breakthrough in spacesuit cleaning technology will be necessary. We all have seen how dirty were the spacesuits used by the Apollo crews after only a few days on the Moon. Even a tiny amount of Martian dust that enters the habitats will make the lives of Martian colonists quite miserable. To study this issue thoroughly, a sample return of a sizable amount of Martian soil might be needed.
