John Carmack commented that it is easier to deliver a lot of
value to a virtual world. This is why digital entertainment and VR is so
popular. One can escape a lower value “real” world and enter the one that is
tailored to our preferences. This territory is discussed in-depth by sci-fi
giants like Philip K. Dick, Larry Niven, Neal Stephenson, and many others. Most
of these scenarios are quite dystopian.
On the other hand, VR opens enormous capabilities in the
medical field or research. It appears that all major inventions bring a ton of
positives and negatives to the table. The stakes are higher every time we
introduce new, revolutionary technology. Artificial intelligence, robotics, ubiquitous computing, etc.,
bring a lot of hard questions.
