The Higgs Boson

This is a fascinating book. Two millennia ago, Aristotle argued that the concept of "nothing" is not valid and difficult to define. Higgs's mathematical model, which was confirmed experimentally in the Large Hadron Collider, postulated a similar interpretation. Empty space is unstable and, therefore, can not exist. There needs to be something that fills the "empty" space for it to exist physically - not just as a geometrical concept. The existence of the Higgs field makes it possible. The discovery of the Higgs boson confirms that the whole universe must be immersed in the invisible and hard-to-detect Higgs field.

There are many far-reaching consequences of this discovery. The picture of particle physics is now mathematically consistent. The Higgs theory explains the existence of mass and how it appears from the building blocks. However, many open questions and ideas still need to be experimentally confirmed. For some of those, the energies achieved by the Large Hardon Collider might be orders of magnitude too weak.
