SST: Social Shaping of Technology

AI: Positive Potential vs. Existential Threat

Social Shaping of Technology #SST

Many brilliant scientists have a dystopian view of the future of AI and Machine learning. Others, however, present a humanist belief and emphasize the potential positive impact of intelligent technologies.

In their public letter, Noah Chomsky, Steven Hawking, and many others have established in the public eye that autonomous AI is a prominent public concern and an existential danger to the planet.

The first revolution in military technology changed the spatial dimensions of combat. The second one was about mutually assured destruction. The third one, the "AI revolution," will enable autonomy.

In addition to military-related issues, many scientists maintain that there are far more imminent issues with AI, like bias or discrimination.

On the other hand, some scientists anticipate that AI will develop in line with inclusive and socially positive values of efficient creativity, kindness, and constructive contributions. There is validity to the argument that human intelligence evolved under severe survival pressures and natural selection and therefore is often used destructively. Those circumstances are not inherently present in the development of intelligent machines. Some scientists maintain that technology is intrinsically a social construct. Progress guided by ethical and responsible science will positively impact future societies.
