Ethical AI
Discussion on ethical AI is challenging in the context of military research. Many general strategies or doctrines focus on gaining or reducing asymmetries in conflict situations. Our ethical standards rooted in legal and regulatory systems might prevent us from investing in specific system architectures. On the other hand, an adversary might use AI-powered methods in a way that is incompatible with our values. This imbalance will objectively generate implications forcing us to defend against those systems. This Reference Shelf publication on emerging technologies is filled with discussions on complex issues of strategic importance.
