Universal Scene Description (USD) for interchange and augment arbitrary 3D scenes
Managing complex 3D scenes in a distributed environment is hard: both on the front and back end. For many applications, however, it is an essential requirement: open worlds, UGC (user-generated content), etc.
USD uses a textual, hierarchical namespace to identify its data by a textual identifier. As a concept, similar to #XML or #SGML hierarchies. USD provides a data structure that contains a scene graph to facilitate authoring and efficient extraction of composed scene descriptions.
USD is roughly the fourth generation of “composed scene description” developed at Pixar. A vital component of the #USD framework was the development of a scalable rendering architecture, dubbed #Hydra, initially deployed with what would become known as the Storm high-performance rasterizing renderer.
