Tesla Robot: Are we in another AI winter?

AI was coined by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky in the 1950s. Since then, there were decades of enthusiastic research followed by a few periods of slowdowns (or winters) caused by formulation and careful examination of (in)famous AI “toy problems.” Today, expectations for AI are increasing enormously. The media, the sci-fi movie industry, and recently #Elon #Musk contributed to raising the bar again. On the other hand, the scientific community is somewhat skeptical. Despite significant progress in deep learning and ubiquitous and user-friendly AI systems, many decades-old problems remain in place. AI is often brittle in larger domains, and huge machine learning models are hard to audit, computational cost and carbon footprints are rapidly increasing.

In my opinion, Honda’s #Asimo and Boston Dynamics are great benchmarks for the Tesla Robot. This project might be harder than reusable rocketry.
