Ad Astra is not a
movie that I enjoy, but I watched it a few times. The future portrayed by this
picture is dark, but it feels realistic. Mind control, harsh actualities of the
Moon, and the Mars colony are not exactly dystopian – they are extrapolations
of what is happening today. I think this is an excellent time to start
discussing ways to #govern the
Mars colony. We might be only a few years away from the first crewed landing
and two or three decades away before a large group of people will live there
more-or-less permanently. Ad Astra does not feel like it belongs to the #cyberpunk
genre represented by William #Gibson and
many others. Worlds created by literary #postmodernist writers feel more
distant. Ad Astra's reality feels like a near-future sci-fi which is quite
chilling for an #AI scientist
and developer. Mind control aided by brain interfaces, sophisticated
chemistry, and AI technologies that we are so eager to develop today might
create a society in which we might not be willing to live. I fear that Ad
Astra's controlled society is more likely to happen than a hostile super-AI or
runaway technologies in a #singularity.
