Chess vs. Dungeons and Dragons is an interesting comparison
that exposes significant difficulties for algorithm developers.
Chess algorithms are facing a combinatorial explosion of
future moves. Optimization usually involves chess knowledge to “focus” on more
likely actions. On the other hand, there is no ambiguity to deal with on the
chessboard. DD algorithms need to deal with natural language ambiguities
describing relationships, stories, quests, events, strategies, actors, etc. I tend to agree that for this application, the
current infatuation with statistical, machine learning methods will ultimately
result in disappointment.
